The new-look Cannons comprehensively beat Southern Combination Division One newcomers Westfield in a 3-0 win at the East Sussex club’s Knight & Davey Community Stadium.
Playing against a team at the same level Hythe impressed as they dominated the first half creating a number of opportunities. Amongst others Harry Codd and Josh Byford had a number of chances. They were denied by some excellent goalkeeping by Jon Saunders in the home goal and some near misses.
Just as you began to think that it wasn’t going to be Hythe’s night they took the lead on 43 minutes. Byford deftly chipped the ball over the defence into the path of Codd who planted his effort past Saunders and into the corner of the net. This took the Cannons into the break with a deserved one goal lead. Perhaps with a little more luck it could have been three or four.
The visitors started the second brightly but were unable to break through the resolute Hythe defence led by captain Lewis Stevens-Toomey standing firm along with their trialist keeper who made a couple of fine saves.
However, it was the Cannons who were to get their second on 63 minutes when a flick on from midfield found its way to Josh Byford who rounded the goalkeeper and planted the ball into the back of the net.
The Cannons put the game out of the hosts reach on 87 minutes as Sammy Carpenter put the ball through to Richie Keil who broke free and slotted the ball under the body of the home keeper to make it 3-0.
It was a really encouraging evening for Hythe which added to the news that the council had approved the planning permission for the new 3G surface at Reachfields led to happy trip home back to Kent.
