Hythe Town 4-0 Canterbury City
Pre-season FriendlySaturday 11th July 2026

A rejuvenated Hythe Town side made a statement in their first game of pre-season as they beat Canterbury City 4-0 at Reachfields on Saturday.

Goals from Jarred Trespaderne, Harry Andrews and Billy Lewins in the first half were followed by a fourth from an unknown player in the second 45.

The game started brightly for Hythe, as the ball hardly left Canterbury’s half at the start of the match.

The Cannons had an early chance which started with Tom Walmsley, who brought the ball down well, turned and played a through ball to Harry Andrews, whose shot went on target but was tipped over by the Canterbury keeper.

The opening goal came in the 11th minute, as a corner was headed away and landed near Jarred Trespaderne, who tucked the ball home on the half-volley for Hythe’s first of the season.

Their second came on 19 minutes from a cross which fell to Canterbury’s left back. He took a bad touch and was dispossessed by Andrews, who put the ball in to make it 2-0.

The Cannons came close to a third goal on the half-hour mark through Richie Keil, when he attempted to chip the ball over the goalkeeper – although he succeeded, a Canterbury defender was there to clear the ball off the line.

However, Hythe did manage to score again in the 36th minute, and once again from a corner – James Nurden’s ball in was met by a bullet header from Billy Lewins to make it 3-0 at half-time.

Two much-changed teams emerged for the second half. It was the visitors who had the first big chance on 59 minutes, when a Canterbury player sent an overhead kick towards goal, which was tipped away brilliantly by Hythe’s trialist goalkeeper.

Despite this, the Cannons did manage to win the second half on 83 minutes thanks to another trialist, who was given the ball by Josh McCue just inside the box and sent his shot into the corner. The keeper got a touch, but it wasn’t enough to prevent Hythe making it 4-0.

The full-time whistle blew to mark a big victory for Hythe – one that hadn’t been seen in a long time and certainly an encouraging way to begin pre-season.

The Cannons return to action on Tuesday evening as they travel to Westfield for their second friendly of the year.
