The Cannons put in an inept performance on Saturday that led to an easy 2-0 win for a resurgent Frankie Sawyer led Chislehurst Glebe at Reachfields.
From the off it was Glebe who took the game to Hythe and had their first attack on two minutes as Khavarn Williams broke free but one of the few players in the Hythe line up who had a good game, Will Dempsey, managed to put pressure on the winger and ball was shot wide. However, that was only a short-term respite as the visitors were ahead on four minutes as Nathan Mampono picked up the ball on the right and put in a cross that was met by Jaden Colman whose attempt hit a Hythe foot and rebounded to Jamie Philpott who stroked the ball home.
Another Hythe player who came out of the game with credit was goalkeeper Henry Newcombe who made a number of saves as Chislehurst attacked in waves. He was on hand to deny the visitors before the hosts created their first opportunity on twelve minutes as Blu Husthwaite swung in a dangerous cross into the middle of the penalty area finding Steadman Callender who on the turn sent the ball just over the bar.
However, chance after chance was coming for Glebe as they cut through the Hythe defence, but Newcombe stood firm and there a number of excellent interceptions by Jerzy Kryzszka, another Cannon who deserved credit.
There was no change in the pattern of play at the start of the second half and on 51 minutes it was two as Newcombe blocked but the ball came back to Mampono who side footed the ball home. The Cannons can count themselves lucky three minutes later as former Cannon Mitch Chapman was brought down in the penalty area however the referee waived away the appeals from the Glebe players.
Hythe did have their second genuine chance of the game just before the hour as a melee in the away penalty area ended with Carvahlo sending the ball wide of the target. The majority of the pressure however continued as Williams had a couple of efforts. Firstly, he broke in and a combination of Newcombe and the chest of Jason Fregene prevented any more damage and then he forced another save from Newcombe. One last save in the last ten minutes from Newcombe kept the score at 2-0.
It had been a chastening afternoon for the Cannons and one from which they must learn. A number of players need to look at themselves critically and make improvements if Hythe are going to stand any chance of avoiding relegation.
