Hythe Town’s disappointing season was topped off with a dreadful 9-0 defeat in their last home match of the season against Faversham Strike Force.
Adam Keil made two changes from the defeat to Sutton Athletic, with Monty Saunders and Josh Cleaver coming in for Rotimi Johnson and Judah Hushie.
The game got off to the worst possible start as, in the first minute, a corner from the far side was knocked on and took an unfortunate touch off Blu Husthwaite to make it 1-0.
It was nearly two just a minute later, when Harry Taylor beat his man to go through on goal, with Ben Gamage making a good stop.
In the fourth minute, Faversham came inches away from another, when Taylor’s header looked to be going in, but was cleared off the line by a defender.
Gamage made two more strong saves on the half-hour mark, as Hythe passed the ball straight to Taylor, whose initial shot was stopped before the follow-up produced an even better save from the keeper.
However, the visitors doubled their lead before long, as Monty Saunders brought down Alex Willis on 35 minutes, and stepped up himself to cleanly convert the penalty.
The Cannons went on to concede two further goals before the break in quick succession – Joe Kay scored the first, before Josh Oliver made it 4-0 at the break.
Things went from bad to worse for Hythe four minutes into the second half, as a ball over from the left-hand side gave Oliver an easy header to make it five.
On 61 minutes, a long throw in was sent in by Faversham, which took a touch before it was met by Harry Taylor’s header.
Soon enough, it was 7-0 – an indirect free-kick inside the penalty area was given, and the confusion of the situation seemed to throw off the players, allowing the set-piece to be planted onto the head of substitute Hayden Wood, who sent it home.
On 80 minutes, another long throw-in proved effective for Faversham. This time, a soft header by Ali Wren beat the goalkeeper to make it 8-0.
And to put the cherry on top of it all, Alfie Williams brought Sonny Hemmings down in the box to give away a second penalty. Alex Willis stepped up again and made no mistake, scoring his second to make it 9-0 to the visitors.
Overall, it was a day that Hythe fans will be eager to forget, as the young Cannons were outplayed completely by a far more experienced and physical side, who were unforgiving.
The season comes to a close on Thursday evening as Hythe travel to Punjab United at 7:45pm.
